How many days do you need on Gili Air?

Home · Journal · How many days do you need on Gili Air?

Two nights feels like a stopover. A week feels like a holiday. How trip length changes what you actually get to do here, night by night.

Gili Air is small enough that a long weekend covers the map, but the things worth doing here — a slow morning, a proper wellness reset, learning the tide table for the good snorkel spot — take longer than a map suggests.

The short answer

Three nights, minimum, and five if you can manage it. Anything less and you spend a disproportionate share of a short trip on a five-to-ten-minute boat crossing that should not cost you that much time. Anything more depends entirely on why you are coming.

Two nights — technically possible, rarely worth it

Two nights is what people book when Gili Air is a stopover between Bali and somewhere else, usually Lombok or one of the other Gilis. You get one full day, one sunset, and just enough time to work out that you wanted longer. It is not a mistake exactly — it is more a preview than a stay.

Four nights — the island actually opens up

Four nights is roughly where Gili Air stops feeling like a checklist. You get a proper snorkel at slack tide, a day with nothing scheduled at all, and enough mornings that skipping one for a long breakfast does not feel wasteful. This is where most first-time guests land, and it is enough time to fit in one of our Soma Vita programmes alongside the beach days.

A week — where the value sits

A week is where the arithmetic starts working in your favour. Rates move with the season rather than with the length of your stay, so a longer booking simply means fewer of your nights fall on the busiest end of the calendar. It is also enough time to actually finish a wellness programme rather than sample it, and to stop feeling like your departure is always two days away.

Two weeks or more — retreats, remote work and the villa

Beyond a week you are usually a different kind of guest: someone working remotely for a stretch, a small group running a yoga retreat, or a couple in the Private Villa who genuinely do not plan to leave the property much. At this length the island's small size — which can feel limiting over a long weekend — stops mattering, because you settle into a rhythm instead of a sightseeing pace.

How to decide

If price is the deciding factor, run the numbers in our full cost breakdown first — a longer stay is often cheaper per night than it looks. If timing is the constraint, check what each month actually feels like before you fix your dates. And if you are still unsure, message us — we would rather tell you honestly that four nights is enough than sell you a week you do not need.

Frequently asked

What's the minimum number of nights worth staying on Gili Air?
Three nights is the practical minimum — enough for one full day either side of the boat crossing. Two nights works as a stopover but leaves little room for anything to go slowly, which is rather the point of the island.
Is 3 days enough for Gili Air?
It's enough to get a feel for the island — a snorkel, a sunset, a slow morning — but most guests wish they had booked a day or two more. If your schedule allows it, four nights is a noticeably better trip than three.
How long do most guests stay at The KOHO Air Hotel?
Most first-time guests stay four to seven nights. Longer stays of two weeks or more are typically remote workers, wellness programme guests, or couples in the Private Villa.
Does a longer stay cost less per night?
Not automatically, but in practice yes: a longer booking spreads across more of the calendar, so fewer of your nights land on peak-season rates. See our full cost breakdown for how the numbers actually move.
