Cycling the island

No cars, no motorbikes, and a sand track all the way around. An hour if you dawdle, which you will.
There are no cars or motorbikes on Gili Air. The traffic is bicycles and the odd cidomo pony cart, and the loop around the island runs about five kilometres — an hour at a gentle pace, longer if you keep stopping, and you will keep stopping.
Parts of the track are paved and easy. Parts, mostly on the north and east side, are deep soft sand where everyone gets off and pushes. That stretch is also the quietest and the prettiest, so it is worth the shove. Bicycles are hired by the day from the shops near the harbour, and we can have one waiting for you.
Good to know. About five kilometres around. Go early morning or late afternoon — the middle of the day is hot and there is very little shade. Expect to push through soft sand on the far side.
