Belongas Hammerhead — The Magnet

The Magnet, in Belongas Bay — a pinnacle off southern Lombok where scalloped hammerheads school. Experienced divers only.
The Magnet is a pinnacle rising out of open water at the mouth of Belongas Bay, on Lombok’s southern coast. In season, scalloped hammerheads come in off the blue in numbers, alongside walls of trevally, tuna and surgeonfish. It has a reputation as one of the most exciting dives in Indonesia and it has earned it.
It is not a gentle dive. Expect swell, surge, cold water and serious current, on a site a long way from anywhere. Operators want Advanced certification and around fifty logged dives before they will take you, and they will call it off if the sea is wrong. Two or three dives in the day, with the Cathedral and Gili Sarang as the calmer alternatives in the same bay.
Good to know. Advanced certification and around 50 logged dives. Hammerhead season runs roughly July to November. From Gili Air this is a very long day — a night in the south is often the better plan, and we can arrange it.
