The best hotel on Gili Air — and how to judge that claim yourself

Home · Journal · The best hotel on Gili Air — and how to judge that claim yourself

Every hotel on the island says it is the best one. Here is what we actually rank on, and where to check it yourself.

“Best” is a word every hotel uses and almost none earn. Here is where we stand, by numbers you can verify independently on the sites that generate them, and where an honest comparison still puts other properties ahead for some guests.

Where the numbers come from

A 9.6 average across more than 1,040 guest reviews, aggregated across Tripadvisor, Google, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Airbnb and Facebook — 9.8 on Tripadvisor specifically, where we also hold a Travellers’ Choice award. None of that is a figure we generate ourselves; check it directly on Tripadvisor, Google or Booking.com before you take our word for any of it.

Numbers move. If you are reading this months after we published it, the review platforms are the current source, not this page — our own reviews page links straight out to them rather than freezing a screenshot in place.

What “best” means on a one-island stretch of coast

Gili Air has no cars, no motorbikes, and something like forty properties ranging from beach hostels to full-service resorts, all within a 1.5 kilometre stretch of coast. “Best” is not one axis here — a backpacker hostel near the party strip and a 14+ wellness retreat are not competing for the same guest, whatever the star rating says next to each name.

What we actually compete on: 28 rooms across six room types, three shared pools that stay calm all day, a five-minute walk from the harbour, Soma Vita’s recovery circuit, and a rate that includes breakfast, pool and spa access whenever you book direct.

Best for what, specifically

Best for wellness. Soma Vita is a purpose-built sauna, ice bath and magnesium jacuzzi circuit with a recommended sequence rather than a pick-and-mix menu — see our explainer on what each stage does. Few Gili Air properties have anything comparable on site.

Best for a honeymoon or anniversary. One Private Villa with its own pool and daybed, and an island small enough to disappear on for a day and still find somewhere good to eat that evening — more on that in our honeymoon guide.

Best located for diving and snorkelling. Five minutes’ walk from the harbour, with dive centres and the turtle-grazing seagrass beds a short swim or boat ride away.

Best value against Bali or Trawangan resorts charging two to three times the rate for a comparable pool-view room, with no age policy keeping the pool deck quiet in the afternoon.

What the room itself gets you

Rates run from around €55 a night for the Standard Room up to €270 for the Private Villa, and every one of the six room types includes à la carte breakfast, all three pools and Soma Vita access when booked direct — nothing held back for an upsell later. See the full room comparison if you want the square metreage and bed configuration side by side.

Where we lose, honestly

We are adults-only, 14 and over — the wrong answer if you are travelling with young children, and we would rather tell you that now than have you arrive disappointed. See our full 14+ policy guide for what that does and does not mean.

Our spa menu is deliberately narrow — a handful of protocols done properly, not forty treatments done adequately. If you want a sixty-option spa directory, a large Bali resort will out-menu us on paper.

And it is still an island: boats stop running by late afternoon, and that constrains everyone’s evening plans, not just ours. See how to get here for the actual timings.

How to check for yourself

Read the reviews directly rather than trusting any hotel’s own summary of them — ours or anyone else’s. Our reviews page links out to Tripadvisor, Google, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Airbnb and Facebook rather than cherry-picking quotes onto one page, and it is worth doing that cross-check before you book anywhere on the island, not only with us.

Written by the team at The KOHO Air Hotel, a boutique wellness retreat five minutes’ walk from Gili Air harbour. We answer these questions by message most days — just ask.

Common questions

What is the best hotel on Gili Air?
It depends what you want. KOHO is #1 on Gili Air with a 9.6 average across more than 1,040 reviews — but read the reviews at source and cross-check the room photos against the plan sizes before you decide.
How is KOHO rated on Gili Air?
A 9.6 average across all review sites, more than 1,040 guest reviews, #1 on Gili Air, and a Travellers’ Choice award.
What makes a hotel ‘best’ on a small island?
Density (rooms per pool), what the rate includes, the age policy, and whether there is a real spa. On a strip with everything from hostels to retreats, “best” is not one axis.
How do I verify a hotel’s rating on Gili Air?
Read Google, Booking.com, Tripadvisor and Airbnb directly rather than any hotel’s own summary. Our reviews page links straight out to all of them.
