The best time to visit Gili Air

Month by month: sea conditions, crowds, prices, and why the shoulder season is the island at its best.
Gili Air is a year-round destination, which is true and also unhelpful. Here is what each part of the year actually feels like on the ground, month by month, rather than a single seasonal average that flattens all of it out.
In this guide
April to June — our favourite
Dry, warm, and the sea flattening out after the wet season ends. Visibility for snorkelling and diving climbs steadily through this window, the reef is at its clearest, and the island has not yet filled up with the July crowd.
Rates sit comfortably below the July–August peak, and rooms that are booked out solid two months later are still easy to find in May. If you can only visit once, this is the window we would point you to.
July and August — the peak
Hot, dry, busy and expensive, in that order. Every boat runs full, every restaurant on the island is open and busy, and every good room within a five-minute walk of the harbour is booked months ahead.
Book the Private Villa in January if you want it in August — there are only two on the entire property, and buyouts are not available at all in July or August since the property is running at full capacity regardless.
September and October — the second window
Still dry, still excellent underwater, and the crowds thinning noticeably week by week as the school-holiday rush fades. This is often the best value of the year: the sea conditions of peak season without the peak-season rates or the queue for a sunset table.
Manta season conditions are usually reliable through this stretch, and it is a good window to combine a stay here with the hammerhead trip to Belongas Bay, which runs roughly July to November.
November to March — the wet season
Rain, but usually in short heavy bursts of an hour or two rather than a grey day of drizzle. Everything greens up fast, the island is genuinely quiet, and rates fall to their lowest point of the year across almost every room type.
Boat crossings are more likely to be affected by weather in this window, particularly in January and February. Build a buffer day at each end of your trip if your onward flight is tight, and consider one of our rooms with an indoor bathroom rather than the fully semi-outdoor option if you would rather not shower in a downpour.
A note on the sea
Water temperature sits between 27 and 29°C all year round, so warmth is never the variable that changes your trip. What actually shifts across the seasons is visibility and swell — both climb through the dry months and soften again once the rain sets in.
Booking around the calendar
If price matters more than crowd size, aim for the wet season and accept the odd rescheduled boat. If you want the calm sea without the July crush, April to June and September to October are the two windows worth building a trip around. For the mechanics of how our rates actually move against the calendar, see the companion piece on Gili Air weather and hotel prices.
