People arrive in the Gilis having read that they are all the same. They are not. Twenty minutes of boat separates three islands with almost nothing in common beyond the sand, and choosing wrong costs you a holiday rather than an afternoon.

Gili Trawangan — the loud one
The biggest of the three, and the one with the nightlife. Bars, parties, dive schools, a proper strip of restaurants, and the widest choice of accommodation at every price point, from backpacker dorms to full villas.
Choose it if you want company, music and options within walking distance of your room. Avoid it if you came here to sleep — the party strip carries further than the marketing photos suggest, and it is not an island where quiet is the default anywhere near the centre.
Gili Meno — the empty one
The smallest and quietest of the three, traditionally sold as the honeymoon island. A salt lake, very few restaurants, and long stretches of beach with nobody on them even at midday.
Choose it for total seclusion, and be aware of the trade-off going in: when you tire of your own hotel's kitchen on night four, there is genuinely not much else within walking distance to switch to.
Gili Air — the balanced one
Roughly 1.5 kilometres across, with a real village rather than a resort strip, a proper choice of places to eat, a handful of dive centres, and the calm that Trawangan lost somewhere along the way to becoming popular.
You can walk the whole island in under an hour, reef on one side and village lanes on the other. There is enough life to have somewhere good to go in the evening, and enough quiet to hear the sea from your room once you are back.

Getting between them
All three islands sit within a twenty-minute boat ride of each other, and the island-hopping service runs several times daily, so trying a second island for a day trip is genuinely easy if you are curious rather than committed.
