A couples retreat on Gili Air

Home · Journal · A couples retreat on Gili Air

An adults-only island the size of a large farm, no cars, water you can see turtles in, and a spa built for two. Gili Air is quietly one of the better places in Indonesia for a trip that is just about the two of you. Here is how to plan it — the room, the shape of the days, and the evenings worth booking ahead.

Why it works for two

KOHO is adults-only, 14 and over, so the pool deck stays calm through the afternoon and dinner is a quiet, low-lit scene rather than a family one. The island itself removes the two things that most often pull a couple’s trip off course: there is no traffic to negotiate and no nightlife pressure — no reason to be anywhere at any particular time. It is small enough to disappear on for a whole day — cycle to the far side, swim off an empty beach, lie in the shade, cycle back — and still be at a good dinner table that night. And the distances are so short that you are never tired from getting anywhere, which leaves the energy for the trip itself. Our 14+ policy guide spells out exactly what the age limit does and doesn’t mean.

Which room

The Private Villa is the obvious choice: 80 m², its own plunge pool and outdoor daybed, a semi-outdoor bathroom open to the sky, a coffee machine, and a walled garden with a gate that nobody else on the property walks through. There is exactly one of it, and it books three months ahead for July, August and the New Year weeks, so fix your dates early and message us before you book flights — we will tell you honestly whether it is open and can hold it briefly while you sort the rest. If it is taken, the Superior Room (42 m², daybed, the most direct view of the main pool) is the room couples take instead and very rarely regret; the private pool is a lovely extra, but the garden, the food and the quiet are what the stay is actually made of. Our pool guide weighs that trade-off in full.

A five-day shape

Loose on purpose — the empty afternoons are the point.

Day 1 — arrive, unpack, swim, dinner on the property, nothing booked.
Day 2 — a floating breakfast in the pool, a lazy morning, cycle the island in the cool of the late afternoon, sauna and magnesium jacuzzi as the light goes.
Day 3 — the one active day: a private boat to Pink Beach for an unstructured afternoon, or out to snorkel with manta rays, weather depending.
Day 4 — a slow morning, a Four Hands massage at Soma Vita, then the four-course terrace dinner by candlelight.
Day 5 — a sunrise walk to Sunrise Point, a final swim, a long breakfast, depart the following morning.

The two-person treatments

The Four Hands massage — two therapists per person, working in mirrored sequence so the whole body is being worked at once — is the one couples describe to their friends afterwards. There is also a couples’ flower bath to follow it, and the sauna, ice bath and magnesium jacuzzi circuit is easy and quite bonding to do together (talking someone through their first cold plunge is its own small adventure). Book any treatments at the same time as the room — the treatment rooms are small, the therapist hours are finite, and the good late-afternoon slots go first in high season.

Dinners and moments

The four-course terrace dinner by candlelight is the set-piece — ask for it a day ahead so the kitchen can plan it. Around that: a drink on the west coast for the sunset, the outdoor cinema night under the stars, the walk to Sunrise Point for the one hour of morning light worth getting up for, and a swim in an empty pool before the day starts. Mention the occasion when you book direct and we will have the room ready with a small welcome touch — there is no package fee attached to asking. The celebrations page lists the extras if you want to arrange more.

When to come

The dry season (roughly April–October) is the reliable window, with July and August the busiest and priciest. The shoulder months — April to June, September, October — are the sweet spot for a couple: warm, mostly dry, quieter, and easier to get the villa. The wet-season months are cheapest and calmest, with rain usually arriving as one heavy afternoon hour rather than a lost day — and a downpour is a good excuse for a long massage. Our best-time guide has the detail.

Anniversary vs honeymoon vs just-because

The trip is much the same; only the framing shifts. A honeymoon leans into the villa and the set-piece dinner and often a longer stay — our honeymoon guide covers that specifically. An anniversary is frequently a returning couple who want the same room they had last time and even less on the schedule. A just-because trip is the easiest of the three: book five nights, one dinner, one massage, and deliberately leave everything else blank.

If you disagree on what a good trip is

Gili Air handles the common mismatch well — one of you wants activities, the other wants to not move. The active partner can dive, freedive, do the long boat days and cycle the island; the other can stay on a daybed with a book and the spa, and you reconvene for lunch and dinner. Nothing here requires you both to do the same thing, and the island is small enough that you are never far apart. The one thing to agree in advance is the phone rule — see the digital-detox guide — because a trip “for the two of you” where one person is on email is not that.

Booking it

Book the room direct for the included breakfast, three pools and Soma Vita access, and to secure the villa if that is what you want. Message us your dates and the occasion; we will tell you honestly what is available, hold a treatment slot alongside the room, and note anything you want waiting when you arrive.

Common questions

Is Gili Air good for couples?
Yes — adults-only options, no traffic or nightlife pressure, water clear enough to see turtles from the surface, and a spa built for two. It is small enough to disappear on for a day and still find a good dinner.
What is the best room for a couple at KOHO?
The Private Villa — plunge pool, walled garden, its own gate — if it is free for your dates. Otherwise the Superior Room, with a daybed and the most direct view of the main pool.
How is a couples retreat different from a honeymoon here?
Little in practice. The honeymoon version leans into the villa and the four-course terrace dinner and often a longer stay — see our honeymoon guide.
Can you arrange something special for an anniversary?
Yes. Mention the occasion when you book direct and we will have the room ready with a small welcome touch — there is no package fee attached to asking.
