A steep coral wall on Nusa Penida's west side, known for the clearest water in the group and, from roughly August to October, a real chance at the ocean sunfish, mola-mola, surfacing to be cleaned.
Crystal Bay earns its name honestly — visibility here regularly beats anywhere off Gili Air, which is exactly what makes the mola-mola season worth timing a trip around. These open-ocean sunfish rise from the deep to reef stations here in the cooler months to be cleaned of parasites, and Crystal Bay is one of the more reliable places in Indonesia to see one.
Outside of mola-mola season it's still a serious wall dive in its own right — a steep coral drop-off, cooler water than Gili Air, and currents strong enough that drift diving with a guide is the only sensible way to do it. It's a long day: a two-hour-plus crossing each way, two dives, and a healthy respect for conditions that can turn quickly.
Good to know. Open Water certification required. A wetsuit is essential — cold thermoclines are common here even when the surface is warm. Mola-mola sightings peak roughly August to October and are never guaranteed.
