A longevity retreat on Gili Air, explained
Home · Journal · A longevity retreat on Gili Air, explained
“Longevity” travel can mean a €20,000 diagnostic clinic or a candle and a playlist. KOHO’s Longevity Lab sits deliberately in between: the protocols with the strongest everyday evidence — heat, cold, light, breath, movement and, above all, sleep — run properly, on an island quiet enough that the rest actually lands. Here is what a stay involves, how to structure it, and what it can and cannot honestly claim.
In this guide
What we mean by longevity here
Not a diagnostic clinic, and not a spa weekend with a new name. The Longevity Lab is built on the interventions that show up consistently in the research on healthspan — the years you stay well, as distinct from the years you stay alive — run properly and for long enough to matter. That list is shorter and less glamorous than the supplement industry would like: regular sauna use, brief cold exposure, morning daylight, breathwork, protein-forward eating, daily movement, and above all consistent sleep. There is no infusion or gadget on the list that beats a week of good sleep, and we say so.
The island does half the work. No cars, no schedule pressure, a pool deck that stays calm, and a last boat that leaves in the afternoon so the evenings are naturally quiet — you are not fighting the environment to wind down the way you would be at a resort with a nightclub. The other half is sequence and repetition, which is what the Lab and the wellness team are for.
The protocols in the Longevity Lab
Heat. Dry sauna, 15–20 minutes at 80–90°C, most days. The observational data linking frequent sauna use to cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality is among the stronger evidence in this field — it is not a proven causal effect, but the association is large and consistent, and the intervention is cheap and pleasant.
Cold. A two-to-three-minute plunge at 10–12°C for recovery and alertness. The adaptation is the point, not the endurance; short and controlled beats long and grim, and the sharp mood lift afterwards is real and lasts a few hours.
Light. Red light panels for skin and joint recovery, plus deliberate morning daylight — ten to twenty minutes outside within an hour of waking — to anchor your circadian rhythm. That single habit does more for your sleep that night than most supplements, and it is free.
Breath. Guided down-regulating breathwork in the open pavilion: slow exhales, long holds at the bottom, nothing dramatic. The aim is a calmer nervous system, not a head rush — this is not the hyperventilation-and-tingle kind.
Movement. Gentle daily movement rather than training hard on holiday — a morning swim, a cycle round the island, a walk to Sunset Point. Enough to keep the body working, not so much that it competes with the recovery you are here for.
Targeted therapies. IV hydration and vitamin drips are available on request, given by a qualified practitioner. They sit at the edges of the programme, not its centre, and we will tell you plainly if you ask us to make them the centre — a drip is a nice-to-have next to sleep and sauna, not a substitute.
The Longevity Lab page has the full kit list; this explainer covers the mechanism behind the heat-and-cold contrast; the spa guide has the order to run the circuit in.
A five-day structure
Five nights is the length most guests choose — long enough for sleep to shift, short enough to fit a normal amount of leave.
Day 1 — arrival, an intake conversation with the wellness team about your goals and any health notes, a magnesium soak, an early night. No circuit on day one.
Day 2 — sunrise light walk, the full sauna and cold circuit mid-morning, rest, a Signature massage in the afternoon.
Day 3 — snorkelling early while the water is still, rest through the middle of the day, red light and breathwork in the evening.
Day 4 — the long day out: the Lombok waterfalls or manta rays, weather depending, then an easy sauna to close rather than a full circuit.
Day 5 — a second massage, an optional IV, a final magnesium soak, and a slow morning before you leave.
A seven-day version
If you have the time, seven nights lets the pattern settle rather than just start. The extra two days are not more protocols — they are repetition (the circuit becomes routine rather than an event), a second long day out at a slower pace, and enough genuinely unstructured time that you leave with a rhythm you might actually keep at home. That last part is the real deliverable. The seven-day Deep Renewal on Programmes is built around a longer pre-arrival call so the week is shaped to you before you land.
The food side
None of the above works well on a buffet of fried carbohydrates. The kitchen can build your meals around protein and plants — fish from the island’s boats, eggs, vegetables and herbs from Lombok, fruit — without turning it into a joyless “detox” menu. Tell the team at the intake conversation how you normally eat and what you are trying to do; they will steer the à la carte choices rather than put you on a fixed plan. Breakfast is included when you book direct, and lunch and dinner are served anywhere on the property between 7:30am and 10pm, so you are not tied to a dining-room schedule. The dining page and the menu show the range.
What the evidence supports — and what it doesn’t
Regular sauna, brief cold exposure, morning light, breathwork, daily movement and consistent sleep each have reasonable evidence behind them for cardiovascular health, recovery, mood and sleep quality. That is a real list and worth travelling for. What none of it does is “reverse ageing”, restore your telomeres, or add a decade — and anyone selling those phrases should be treated with suspicion. What a well-run week can realistically do is reset your sleep, break a stress cycle, teach you what the protocols actually feel like when done properly, and hand you a short routine that survives the trip home. We would rather undersell that and have you leave surprised than oversell it and have you leave sceptical.
Who it suits, and who it doesn’t
It suits people who already take training and sleep seriously and want a focused block to reset; couples where one partner is the wellness driver and the other just wants a quiet holiday, because both are catered for on the same property; anyone coming off a hard year of work who needs somewhere that makes rest the path of least resistance; and people who are curious about cold and heat protocols but do not want to figure out the sequencing alone.
It is not a medical programme and not a place to recover from an acute illness or recent surgery. If you have a condition that needs monitoring — heart, blood pressure, pregnancy, a metabolic condition — bring your own doctor into the plan before you book. And it is the wrong week if what you actually want is a party holiday with a spa attached; the quiet is the point, and you will find it slow.
How to prepare, and what to bring
In the two weeks before you come, if you can: shift your sleep a little earlier, cut back on alcohol, and get some morning daylight at home so the reset is a continuation rather than a shock. Bring swimwear you are happy to be active in, a light layer for evening boat rides, and reef-safe sunscreen. You do not need supplements, a sleep tracker or special clothing; the Lab provides towels, water and tea. Come with one honest sentence about what you want from the week — “I want to sleep again”, “I want to stop feeling wired” — because that sentence is what the team builds the days around.
Booking, and what to tell us first
Message us on WhatsApp or through the contact page with your dates, your goal for the week, and anything relevant — pregnancy, cardiac history, blood pressure, recent surgery, medications — so we can shape the circuit around you rather than around a template. Cold immersion and the full circuit are 18 and over. Book the room direct for the included pool and Soma Vita access; treatments and IVs are billed to your room, and we will hold a treatment slot alongside the room booking if you ask.
