A Balinese Hindu temple on a black rock above the sea, looking across the strait at Bali's Mount Agung.
Batu Bolong means ‘the rock with a hole’, which is exactly what it is: a black volcanic outcrop pierced through by the sea, with a small Hindu temple built out along it. It stands on the coast just south of Senggigi and it is still very much in use — you will often arrive to find offerings being laid.
Go for the last hour of the day. The temple faces west across the Lombok Strait, and on a clear evening the sun goes down behind Mount Agung on Bali. Shoulders and knees covered, and a sash at the waist; sarongs are lent at the entrance for a donation.

Good to know. Open roughly 8am to 5pm, and worth timing for the last hour of light. It is a working temple — dress modestly and follow your guide if a ceremony is under way.
